Jing Chi is a powerhouse jazz-fusion and blues-rock supergroup that emerged in the early 2000s, uniting three of the most revered instrumentalists in modern music. The trio features renowned guitarist Robben Ford, legendary drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, and foundational bassist Jimmy Haslip. Originally collaborating as seasoned session players and acclaimed solo artists, the three musicians formed Jing Chi as a dedicated vehicle for high-level musical interplay and sophisticated, groove-heavy compositions. Their sound seamlessly blends the improvisational depth of jazz with the raw energy of a classic blues-rock power trio, anchored by Haslip’s harmonically rich and dynamically precise bass lines, which provide the perfect pocket for Ford's stinging guitar work and Colaiuta’s complex rhythmic explorations.
The group made its studio debut with its self-titled album, Jing Chi, released via Tone Center Records. The acclaimed record firmly established their chemistry, leading to the 2003 concert album Live! (recorded at Yoshi's), which captured the kinetic energy of their stage performances and featured guest appearances by Otmaro Ruiz and Marc Russo. They continued to expand their catalog with the release of 3D in 2004, further showcasing their intricate writing and tight arrangements. Following a thirteen-year hiatus—during which the members focused on their extensive individual projects and A-list session work—Ford, Colaiuta, and Haslip reunited to release their fourth album, Supremo, in 2017. Co-produced by Haslip and Ford, the record proved the enduring, chemically charged connection between the trio, continuing their legacy of blending virtuosic musicianship with tightly crafted, blues-infused fusion.
