Shining Path was a short-lived experimental funk-rock and avant-garde fusion band formed in the early 1990s, serving as a unique collaborative vehicle for Swedish bass virtuoso Jonas Hellborg. Anchoring the group's rhythm section, Hellborg was joined by his frequent collaborators, brothers Anders Johansson on drums and Jens Johansson on keyboards. To contrast the Johanssons' heavy jazz-fusion and neoclassical metal roots, the band enlisted a powerhouse vocal duo: Gary "Mudbone" Cooper, celebrated for his tenure with Parliament-Funkadelic, and Bernard Fowler, a veteran vocalist known for his extensive work with the Rolling Stones and Tackhead.
The quintet released their sole album, No Other World, in 1992 on Hellborg’s independent label, Day Eight Music. The record captured an eclectic, groove-centric sound that seamlessly merged Hellborg's pioneering chordal bass techniques with deep-funk sensibilities and progressive-rock elements. While Shining Path's lifespan was incredibly brief—making them a relatively obscure entry when mapping out the expansive, interconnected discographies of its individual members—the project remains a fascinating, genre-blending milestone in early '90s experimental music.
