Jim Hillman is a highly regarded Canadian jazz drummer, bandleader, and educator who has made significant contributions to the contemporary jazz scene, most notably as the founder of the vocal jazz group The Merlin Factor. Formed in Montreal, the ensemble quickly garnered critical acclaim, with their 1993 self-titled debut album winning the prestigious JUNO Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. This early success solidified Hillman's reputation as a visionary bandleader and lyricist, leading the group to further accolades, including a subsequent JUNO nomination for their album Frontier Tunes and being named "Best Electric Jazz Group" by The Jazz Report magazine for three consecutive years.
Beyond his work as a frontman, Hillman has established a prolific career as a versatile sideman, touring and recording with an impressive roster of international artists. His collaborative credits span across genres, having performed with Canadian jazz legends like Sonny Greenwich and Oliver Jones, Brazilian music pioneers such as Marcos Valle and Roberto Menescal, and R&B icon Ben E. King. In addition to his ongoing performance and recording schedule, Hillman is deeply committed to music education, having served on the academic staff at Concordia University in Montreal, where he has mentored the next generation of jazz musicians.
