About Danny Gottlieb

Danny Gottlieb (born April 18, 1953) is a highly acclaimed American jazz drummer and educator, best known as a founding member of the original Pat Metheny Group (1977–1983). A protégé of legendary drummer Joe Morello, Gottlieb developed a distinctive style that blends jazz finesse with fusion power, contributing to several Grammy-winning recordings during his early career. Throughout his prolific career, he has appeared on over 400 recordings and performed with a diverse array of musical giants, including John McLaughlin’s Mahavishnu Orchestra, Chick Corea, Gil Evans, Sting, and Bobby McFerrin.

In addition to his performances, Gottlieb has maintained a strong career as an educator, serving as a Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of North Florida. He is an accomplished author of several drumming textbooks, including The Evolution of Jazz Drumming, and has released numerous educational DVDs. Since 2004, Danny and his wife, percussionist Beth Gottlieb, have been integral members of Gary Sinise's Lt. Dan Band, playing numerous benefit concerts for the USO and military charities.

Gottlieb has been featured on the covers of Modern Drummer and DownBeat magazines and is recognized as one of the most respected "session artists" in contemporary music. Currently based in Nashville, he continues to perform, teach, and work as a clinic endorser for Zildjian cymbals and DW drums.
