About Attention Deficit

Formed in the late 1990s, Attention Deficit is a fiercely technical instrumental supergroup that brought together three distinct powerhouses from the rock and metal worlds. The trio features fretless bass virtuoso Michael Manring, widely known for his innovative solo work and his tenure with Michael Hedges; acclaimed guitarist Alex Skolnick of the thrash-metal titan Testament; and drummer Tim "Herb" Alexander, celebrated for his deeply complex, polyrhythmic grooves with Primus. The project initially grew out of collaborations on Manring’s 1994 solo release, Thonk, and eventually solidified into a standalone band under the progressive Magna Carta label.

The group’s sound is a wildly eclectic fusion of instrumental rock, jazz, thrash metal, and funk. Each member's distinct musical pedigree is on full display, resulting in unpredictable compositions that balance intense rhythms with highly melodic phrasing. Skolnick's transition from heavy metal to jazz improvisation is perfectly complemented by Alexander's muscular, off-kilter percussion. Anchoring—and often leading—the sonic attack is Manring, whose unparalleled command of the bass, frequent use of alternate tunings, and harmonic mastery drive the band's unique dynamic.

Attention Deficit released two critically praised albums during their run: their self-titled debut, Attention Deficit, in 1998, and the follow-up, The Idiot King, in 2001. Though their discography is brief, the trio's work remains a highly respected touchstone in the modern fusion and progressive metal scenes, serving as a masterclass in musicianship and an essential listen for fans of heavy, experimental instrumental music.
