Anatomy of I is a progressive death metal band hailing from the Netherlands, masterminded by vocalist and main songwriter Michael Dorrian. Blending a wide array of influences—ranging from 1970s jazz fusion to extreme technical death metal—the band has cultivated an experimental and avant-garde sound. Despite their complex, tech-heavy approach, Anatomy of I remains grounded in cohesive songwriting, creating music that is both aggressively heavy and intricately layered.
The group first made significant waves with their 2011 debut full-length album, Substratum. For this record, Dorrian enlisted a formidable rhythm section comprising two heavyweights of the extreme metal scene: fretless bass pioneer Steve Di Giorgio (Death, Testament, Sadus) and drummer Dirk Verbeuren (Megadeth, Soilwork). The prominent inclusion of Di Giorgio's highly technical, jazz-influenced bass lines provided a distinct, progressive counterpoint to the album's aggressive riffing, instantly elevating the band's profile and cementing Substratum as a standout release in the technical death metal community.
In the years following their debut, Anatomy of I evolved their lineup to include live members and fresh collaborators—such as drummer Edwin van den Eeden and bassist Roderick Ras—to support their ongoing musical pursuits. In 2022, the band partnered with Time To Kill Records to release The Los(t) Angered Sessions, an archival collection of their earliest unreleased studio recordings from 2005 and 2006. Through shifting rosters and decades of musical evolution, Dorrian’s project continues to push the boundaries of the genre with its uncompromising technicality.
