Krantz Carlock Lefebvre (often simply referred to as KCL) is a genre-bending, jazz-fusion powerhouse trio consisting of visionary guitarist Wayne Krantz, drummer Keith Carlock, and bassist Tim Lefebvre. Emerging as an underground phenomenon, the group developed a profoundly original, interactive style of group improvisation during their famously long residency at New York City's 55 Bar throughout the 2000s. Fusing the harmonic depth of contemporary jazz with the bone-crunching impact of a heavy rock power trio, KCL shattered musical conventions. Their live shows, widely circulated as digital downloads in the early days of the internet, cultivated a devoted international following drawn to their relentless grooves and spontaneous, real-time creative interplay.
The trio captured their electrifying dynamic in the studio with their critically acclaimed 2009 album, Krantz Carlock Lefebvre. While the group's output as a collective has been sporadic, individually, the members boast staggering pedigrees that span the highest echelons of the industry. Krantz has worked with Steely Dan and Michael Brecker; Carlock has manned the kit for Sting, John Mayer, and Steely Dan; and Lefebvre has held down the low end for the Tedeschi Trucks Band and on David Bowie’s final masterpiece, Blackstar. Whether performing live or recording, KCL stands as a masterclass in rhythm-centric phrasing and bold improvisation, cementing their legacy as one of the most innovative and uncompromising ensembles in modern instrumental music.
