About Tom Fowler Interface

Tom Fowler Interface was a contemporary jazz and fusion ensemble led by the late American bassist Tom Fowler (1951–2024), a highly respected musician best known for his extensive work with Frank Zappa and a decade-long tenure with Ray Charles. Conceived primarily as a studio project and a dedicated vehicle for Fowler's original compositions, the group highlighted his expansive musicality. Within the Interface, Fowler stepped beyond his traditional foundational role on the bass, acting as the primary songwriter, producer, and engineer, while also contributing on violin.

The ensemble's definitive output is their 2011 album, Let's Start Over, released via Forbidden Vegetable Music Co. To bring these complex, jazz-inflected arrangements to life, Fowler assembled a powerhouse lineup of veteran session musicians. The core recording band featured his brother and frequent collaborator Walt Fowler on trumpet and keyboards, renowned guitarist Mike Miller, acclaimed jazz drummer Gary Novak, and vocalist Andrea Miller. Through this collective, the Tom Fowler Interface served as a focused, deeply personal outlet, allowing the veteran bassist to fully showcase his creative vision beyond his celebrated supporting roles.
